Whilst sex toys may have been around for centuries, there was never before the almost overwhelming variety of toys and pleasure devices that are available today. Whether you are a newcomer to the world of sex toys and wondering where to start, or a seasoned aficionado of a specific type of toy who is looking to expand their horizons, this edition of the Belupa blog is for you. Here we compile a comprehensive list of the different kinds of sex toys available to stoke your desire and enhance your pleasure.

Since we are firm believers that variety is indeed the spice of life (and everyone is different) we will be exploring a wide range of possibilities. Some of them will tickle your fancy, whilst others may not be your cup of tea. As such, we will introduce the style of toy briefly here. There will be a deeper exploration of items you may be interested in coming later and we will provide links in the text, for your convenience, as they become available.

Now for part I: lets get started with the most obvious (and popular) toys!

The Vibrator

Vibratore

Vibrator is a generic term for a “vibrating electrical apparatus used in massage or sexual stimulation”, but they are by no means all alike. Vibrators can be used by anyone, on lots of different areas of the body. If you get imaginative (think of your personal favorite erogenous zones), you can soon learn what you do and don’t like in terms of area, intensity and type of vibration. Take appropriate care though, as not all vibrators are suitable for anal stimulation, for example. In fact, most were designed with a specific function in mind and tend to excel at that function. There are various types of vibrator; each adapted to have different strengths. For example, the (famed) magic-wand style, bullet -style and finger vibrators, rabbit -style, G-spot vibrators, different modes of clitoral stimulation, anal and P-spot vibrators, vibrators for the penis, thrusting vibrators, couples vibrators and classic or realistic-style vibrators. Which vibrator will suit you best is a personal question that only you can really answer. Also, do you really have to have only one favorite kind when there are so many to choose from? You can click here (Vagina Edition / Couples, Penis, Anal Edition ) to take a “deeper” look and for advice to help you decide which might be the best style(s) of vibrator for you!

The Dildo

Dildo

Dildos are probably one of the oldest sex toys. So the variety of dildo available today is naturally expansive. From dildos created to imitate a realistic phallus (in appearance, size, touch, and even ejaculation) to those of a gargantuan size, or playful fantasy shape and color. It is possible to find what you desire. Some can be temperature regulated (able to be either warmed or cooled to add extra sensation during use). Some are inflatable. Some come with a handy suction cup or handle for solo play (that also helps for those with reduced hand mobility or to reach new angles or achieve better thrust). Some are created with insertion into a vagina in mind (including G spot stimulation) while others are created for anal insertion (including prostate stimulation). The choice of material (depending on what you want to use it for and any allergies) is also up to you with dildos available in silicone, metal, glass, latex, and TPE (for some examples). Wearable dildos in the form of strap-ons are a very popular type of dildo and can come ready to use, or customizable to your own personal preferences. You can wear them with a harness, a simple strap, or a special form of underwear (for added comfort). There are hollow strap-ons that can act as an extension of your penis, and be used to prolong intercourse or to help with ED (Erectile Dysfunction). Or there are strap-ons to be worn internally (if you have a vagina), available as strapless or double strap-ons either of which can provide simultaneous pleasure for both partners. You can even wear a strap-on on the chin to facilitate combination of penetration with oral sex. Strap-ons can enhance the sexual experience for anyone of any gender or any sexual orientation. Anal Play

Anal Play

We often find talk of anal play results in very different responses; those who are in the know, those who are curious and those who immediately proclaim “nothing is going anywhere near my butt!” That said these toys are gaining considerably in popularity and anal toys can be as varied as vibrators and dildos. In fact, as mentioned before there are anal-specific varieties of both the classic toys. In addition, you can also find anal beads, butt plugs, prostate massagers and even gut snakes (which as inferred by the name can be long…very long). The toys can be made of silicone, PVC, metal or glass (which can be heated or cooled for extra sensation). These toys usually have a flared base or ring or handle which is important as the anus has a tendency to suck objects inwards. If your anal toy does not have a stopper you need to be exceptionally careful or you might find yourself having to get it professionally removed! We recommend choosing toys with an appropriate base.

There are also specially formulated lubricants for the anus (a necessity, since it does not self-lubricate like the vagina). These lubricants are designed to give extra, longer lasting lubrication and some have additional relaxing properties. There are also anal douches to simultaneously stimulate and clean the area for those who prefer to pre-prepare. If you are acquainted with the pleasure of anal play there are increasing dimensions, alternative shapes, new materials, and different aesthetics to explore. Some butt plugs come with jewels, flowers or tails including some that also light up or glow in the dark for a little kinky enticement. Most anal toys are available in vibrating form also and some are inflatable. Also, if you want to change up your strap-on for use in pegging you could consider trying a progressive butt plug as an alternative to your favorite dildo; assuming it has the appropriate base and dimensions to fit your harness.

For those who are new it can seem a little daunting, knowing where to start. However, if you did give it a try and you liked the sensations the rewards could be immense. Feeling curious? Lets anal-yze further! Check out this beginners guide to anal beads and plugs (LINK coming soon)… These two beginner toys offer two very different sensations and can be used to intensify or to create blended orgasms.

General Sex Toy Care

Sex toy care

While certainly less exciting than the other sections, we would like to take a moment to give some suggestions on how to care for and get the best out of your sex toys.

You can enhance your experience and better preserve your toy by using an appropriate lubricant; as stated before, a necessity for anal play. It is important to choose the correct type of lubricant so as not to damage or degrade your toy. Silicone-based lubricants are often chosen for anal lubrification since they can last a little longer, but they are not suitable for most toys. Water-based lubricants are generally best for toys. Some lubricants are marketed specifically for toys so that you can be more secure that they are compatible, but most water-based lubricants should be fine with most toys. Always check the instructions that come with the toy. On belupa.com we have included a note in the product description to suggest appropriate lube when required. You can choose from the many different water-based lubricants available (scented, heated, cooling, flavored, vibrating, tightening, relaxing) based on your own preference. Remember, when using condoms you will need a lubricant that is also compatible.

It is important to thoroughly clean your sex toys after every use (also before if you prefer or if they have been stored for a while). You should always read any accompanying instructions carefully as different materials and toys have different care requirements. Click on the link here (Sextoy Care) for tips and tricks for general care. Sex toys should not generally be shared and a good rule of practice is one orifice one sex toy – otherwise condoms for toys are highly recommended. Damaged toys should always be replaced promptly. Storage is as important as the cleaning process and toys should be stored in a cool dry place in an individual container. Never store your sex toys in contact with each other (different products can react with, and degrade, each other).

Look out for Part II…

We hope you found some interesting information, but if you did not yet find your sex toy of preference/ a new curiosity, stay tuned for Part II of the guide. Perhaps you will be enticed by the next edition!
